- The ad-hoc Community Safety Committee (CSC) and Fire-Wise sub-committee are comprised of ten community members: Dan McCaughan-Chair, Jack Withrow-Vice Chair, Board Members Don Moore and Rod Falor, Maggie and Roy Horn, Bob Cushman, Rich Petteys, Bob McDaniels, Ted Taylor, and Pam Foss-Committee Secretary.
CSC and Firewise activities for this annual period include:
- The CSC explored options for safe ingress/egress in the event it was necessary for people to evacuate the community.
- Members discussed ideas to mitigate speeding in the community. One of which was to pursue some sort of agreement with Tribal Police for better visibility as a deterrent to speeding.
- The CSC recommended a safety barrier at the Klamath intersection and was concerned that any action taken to mitigate the safety issue at "Klamath" be a collaborative effort with the adjacent home owner living at the intersection.
- The CSC discussed ways to communicate safety information to community members and ways to positively influence safe behaviors, i.e. reflective devices worn during reduced visibility, use of safety eye-wear and hearing protection. These items are considered Personal Protective Devices (PPD).
- The chair attended the National Safety Conference in Anaheim, CA through his company and reported out to the committee and shared knowledge gained from attending several educational seminars which included; Pandemic Planning, Incident Investigation, Safe Communities America movement and qualifiers.
- Shelter Bay was awarded a scholarship for one person to attend a Firewise Conference in Tampa Bay, FLA. We had to decline this year, but did so soon enough for another community to accept the opportunity to attend.
- In collaboration with the community manager, the CSC provided ideas for simplifying previous documents to inform community members of the safety rules when using the fire pits at Martha’s Beach.
- The CSC continually looks for ways to persuade community members to show their home numbers in a manner that enables emergency vehicles and first responders to identify homes from the street.
- The CSC has been working on details for purchase and installation of an emergency generator(s) for the Club House. The committee has secured funds for this goal.
- At the time of this report, the CSC has put together a plan for a "Family Safety Day" on May 17th 2009 from 11:00am to 3:00pm. The informal event will hold numerous activities and offer a wide variety of educational safety information.
- Safety Committee members continue to discuss ways to address two main concerns; 1) controlling traffic and 2) enforcement that does not involve committees. Several ideas remain on the table; possibly upgrading a security person, Community Watch Programs, and/or traffic speed indicators for purchase or rent.
Firewise Sub-Committee
- Maggie Horn and Judy Grosvenor reported that Firewise accreditation has been awarded for 2009.
- Jack Withrow reported from the Greenbelt Committee with plans to go forward with "Phase III" of the fuel reduction project.
- Roy Horn continually provides the committee with his insight and Protection District #13 Emergency Response reports derived from his profession as a fire fighter.
