The Harbor Committee submitted the required paper work for permits to the Corps and the Tribe for replacement of 10 bad pilings in the marina with galvanized steel piling in 2008. These piling were replace in early February 2009. Additional permits are in process for spot dredging in the north basin where shore side drainage has limited moorage during low tides at 8 lots. The scope of work is being defined. Once the permits are in hand we will put this project out for bid. We hope to dredge by the next window for dredging this season (July 15, 2009 to Feb. 15, 2010). Funds have been budgeted for this project.
We have had three serious emergencies in the last fiscal year. There was a fire in the summer and a sinking during the December snow both resulting in total constructive losses of both vessels. Recently there was an onboard gasoline fuel spill. This vessel was towed from the Marina. There are still many moorage holders that do not have emergency contact phone numbers posted on the dock side window. The committee and office staff is working to get every moorage holder in compliance especially in view of the above emergencies.
The Committee members are continuing to explore ideas by which they can find avenues that will allow some necessary repair and maintenance to our ever-deteriorating marina. We are investigating costs replacing some of the older and most deteriorated finger piers. Present plan is to enlist the community to have work parties to build and install finger piers to keep costs to a minimum.
New piling hoops have been installed on several pier fingers. Thirty minute loading signs have been place near the top of each pier. Pier maintenance is an ongoing project by the Harbor Master.
A five year capital budget has been submitted to the SB Company Board. Highlights include: community built finger pier replacement, community built launching ramp upgrades, dredging in the marina in order of importance over 4 years, underwater piling survey, pier electrical upgrades in order of importance over 5 years.
We are fortunate that in the present economy that slip vacancy rate is the same as in previous years. The committee is working to keep the marina full year around. No moorage rate increase is planned in the next fiscal year.
